Pompeii and Herculaneum: what really happened during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius

Talking about the history of Pompeii and Herculaneum means entering a territory where tragedy and archaeology come together in a way that is unique in the world. These are not just two cities buried by a volcano; they are the snapshot of two Roman communities with their own rhythms, customs, hierarchies, and landscapes, frozen in time by a natural phenomenon of unprecedented violence.

What to see in Pompeii: the most impressive spots to plan your visit

Every corner of this ancient Roman city was frozen in time by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Walking through its streets is a magnificent opportunity to understand how daily life unfolded before everything turned to ash. If you are planning a visit, we tell you about the must-see places in Pompeii so you don’t miss a thing.

Pompeii vs. Herculaneum: key differences every traveler should know

When we think of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, both cities immediately come to mind. They were both buried by this natural disaster in 79 AD, and today they allow us to walk along almost intact Roman streets, opening a great window into the past. However, although they are often mentioned together, there are differences between Pompeii and Herculaneum, and we would like to help you discover them.

Guided tour of Pompeii: a journey into the daily life of Ancient Rome

Pompeii is one of those places that leave a lasting impression. Walking along its cobbled streets, entering its houses, temples, and taverns, and observing the remains of a city frozen in time allows us to get closer than almost anywhere else to the daily life of Ancient Rome. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, visiting Pompeii means exploring one of the most important and most visited archaeological sites in the world.

We are talking about an entire city, which is why taking a guided tour of Pompeii is the best way to optimize your time and truly understand what you are seeing. These are not just ruins: every building, every fresco, and every inscription tells a story. Accompanied by an expert guide, the visit gains meaning and coherence, helping us interpret how its inhabitants lived before the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.

Plan Your Visit to the Pompeii Archaeological Park

Buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D., the city was frozen in time, allowing us today to walk through its streets, houses, temples, and baths almost exactly as they were two thousand years ago. The site extends across a vast area, so it is advisable to plan your visit to Pompeii in advance and set aside several hours to explore it at a relaxed pace. Walking through Pompeii is the best way to understand daily life, urban organization, and the customs of a Roman city at the height of its splendor.

General Access to Pompeii and Accessibility

Although it is an ancient site, significant efforts have been made to improve accessibility at the Pompeii Archaeological Park. There is a route (Pompeii for All) designed for visitors with reduced mobility that allows you to visit part of the Park via adapted paths.

However, it is important to remember that the original pavement of the Roman city has been preserved, with uneven cobblestones and level changes, which can make movement difficult in some areas. Park staff are available to assist and provide information on the most accessible itineraries. Accessible restrooms are available near the main entrances and at other points within the site.

Purchasing Tickets for the Pompeii Archaeological Park

Given the high number of visitors throughout the year, especially in spring and summer, we recommend purchasing Pompeii tickets in advance. Buying ahead helps avoid long lines at the entrances and better organize your visit time. Tickets include access to Pompeii’s main archaeological site and can be complemented with audio guides or guided tours to gain a deeper understanding of the site’s historical and archaeological value, as the size of the area and the richness of its details make having an expert guide helpful for putting the spaces, frescoes, and most iconic buildings into context.

In certain cases, tickets will not be sent by email and must instead be collected in person at the meeting point indicated in the booking confirmation. Information regarding the collection point, as well as the specific delivery conditions, is clearly detailed during the purchase process and in the confirmation email received by the User.
